Northeast 5-Step Fertilization

We Customize to Your Property

Because of our short growing season in the Northeast, we have developed a five-step program. Each step is different and has different benefits for your lawn.

Step 1 - Spring Application

This is an essential step for a positive start and will dictate how the rest of our season goes.

Fertilizer:

A balanced fertilizer with a slightly elevated nitrogen level. This will wake the lawn up by sending a message to the grass plant. It tells the grass the hibernation period is over and it's time to get back to work.

Pre-Emergent:

A Pre-Emergent helps to control the crabgrass, annual grass and other unwanted vegetation. This is applied in the first step because it is essential to have this done before the crabgrass is able to establish itself. We require each property to get a pre-emergent in step 1, unless requested otherwise by the property owner. It's important to understand that all products break down with weather and time. There is six to eight weeks of coverage from the time of application. The coverage is also affected by weather and irrigation. If we have a very wet spring, this may cause the product to breakdown more quickly. If it is a dryer season, this may allow for longer protection. For optimum control, we suggest a second round of pre-emergent roughly six to eight weeks after the first. This would be applied during your Step 2, and would need to be requested prior.

Broadleaf Weed Control:

Broadleaf weed control helps eradicate the unwanted vegetation in your lawn. Broadleaf weeds can be very intrusive and compete with the grass plants, often taking over. Some weeds are very easy to control, others can be difficult. More aggressive weeds will require additional applications to eradicate the problem. We will evaluate the need for weed control each time we are on the property. Once again, this is weather pending.

Step 2 - Early Summer Application

This is done roughly in mid-June to mid_July. In this step we not only feed the lawn, but also aid in preventing the infestation of harmful insects. This is when we can apply a second crabgrass control (upon customer request). We also eradicate any late season or difficult broadleaf weeds which may be present.

Fertilizer:

A balanced, slow-release fertilizer is applied to assure your lawn continues to get the necessary nutrients required throughout the early summer months.

Insect Control:

There are two kinds of insect control - curative and preventative. The curative insect control is more expensive, plus you have to fix any damage the insects may cause. The preventative is less expensive and will prevent the insects from infesting and causing damage. This is your best defense.

Extra Pre-Emergent: (Upon Request)

This is a service we offer that needs to be requested and added to a basic program. An extra pre-emergent is for the customer who wants to ensure crabgrass doesn't stand a chance. You get six to eight weeks of coverage with Step 1. By adding a second application, this gives you twelve to sixteen weeks of coverage, getting your property through the extreme heat of summer.

*Please note that if there is a breakthrough of crabgrass after a second application, we at A+ Fertilizing, LLC., will come back with a post-emergent at our cost to assure the best results for our customers.

Broadleaf Weed Control:

Any late season weeds or weeds that need a second application will be addressed in this round, weather pending. Extreme heat may prevent application to assure no harm comes to the grass plants.

Step 3 - Summer Application

This is maintenance step. This allows us to come in and continue to provide the necessary nutrients to keep your lawn healthy. We eradicate any unwanted weeds that may have invaded throughout the season.

Fertilizer:

A balanced slow release fertilizer will be applied. The fertilizer we use will depend on the drought, heat, rain and other weather conditions that occur. Our goal with Step 3, is to assure top notch color, growth and health to the grass plants during our unpredictable summer months.

We will control any unwanted vegetation that may have invaded throughout the season.

Step 4 - Fall Application

This is when we put your lawn to sleep for the winter. Besides waking up your lawn in the spring, this may be the most beneficial step of fertilizer that is offered.

Fertilizer:

This step is essential to a healthy lawn in your future. Your lawn is at risk if you do not put it to sleep. This is our chance to focus on root growth. The fertilizer sends a message to the plant to store food and properly hibernate for the winter months. The fertilizer we use will be an extended, slow-release and will be high in potassium.

Broadleaf Weed Control:

We come in and attempt to eradicate any unwanted weeds which may have invaded.

Step 5 - Late Fall Application

Lime:

Lime is essential here in the Northeast, due to our acidic soil. All year we ask a lot from our soils and this is our chance to give back. We choose to do this in the fall to help us for the following year. Fall is the most convenient time for us to do this application, but there is never a bad time to apply lime. Lime takes time to breakdown. The more applications of lime, the sweeter the soil will become.

We want your property to look its best!

As you can see, we offer many services to do just that. We have a wealth of knowledge in all of these services. If you would like to have one or many of our fertilization services, please contact us today.
